Our Story

Built By A
Pro.

Ryse Athletic Club isn't a franchise. It's a real gym, built by a real bodybuilder who wanted somewhere serious to train. That's the standard for everything we do.

Justin Maki has lived the lifter's grind since he was a kid. Years of training, tens of thousands of reps, every bracket of the NPC ladder climbed.

In 2017 he took first place at the NPC Nationals, earning his IFBB Pro card. He's competed on Pro stages in Chicago, New York, and Tampa.

Ryse Athletic Club is the gym he wished existed when he was coming up. Premium equipment, real culture, and the kind of atmosphere that produces serious athletes.

The Mission

Just like our members, Ryse is always striving to be better.

The Journey

Our Growth,
Year By Year.

From day one in Gurnee to what's coming next — the story of Ryse, told through the moments captured by our team throughout the journey.

  1. 2020

    Presale To Opening Day

Before a single weight was racked, the vision went public — the presale opens in Gurnee and founding members lock in. Then the doors swing open and RYSE comes to life.

  2. 2021

    Growth Continues

The floor fills out and new equipment keeps rolling in. Lifters find their home, the crew grows, and RYSE-branded apparel arrives.

  3. 2022

    More Machines, More Amenities

The build-out keeps going — more premium machines roll in, and new amenities like the women's locker rooms are added.

    2023

The Start Of The Big Expansion

Three years in, and grateful for every member who's made this place home — the men's locker room finally opens. Then the vision goes public: we're outgrowing our space, and the first big expansion is coming — 3,600 sq ft of turf, a 4,500 sq ft free-weight area with its own strongman/powerlifting zone, a basketball court, and a smoothie bar.

    2024

    Expansion Continues

The expansion doesn't just continue — it lands. The men's and women's saunas open, a women's-only workout studio launches upstairs, and near the end of the year the new turf area rolls out, finishing the big expansion.

  6. 2025

    To The Next Level

The year RYSE took everything to the next level — real cultural impact and nonstop growth. Redefine Yourself. Shock Everyone. The STYKU 3D body scanner arrives, giving every member a detailed profile to track progress and chase their goals, and a huge RYSE-branded equipment partnership with Watson rolls out.

  7. 2026

    Mundelein & Beyond

The next chapter. A second location in Mundelein — bigger floor, bigger vision, same standard.
